I can’t believe that I only have two more week here in St. Lucia! Today in my desk I found a note from a student that said, “I'm going to miss you!!!!" It kind of hit me that I only have two more weeks with these kids! I am going to miss all of my students when I leave. They have taken me in so well and I have made some wonderful connections with them!
This past week my students were busy reviewing for their end of term exams that begin next week. We didn’t cover any new material this week. The students only reviewed what they had already learned throughout the term, which is a lot! Next week my students will begin their exams with Language Arts, Composition and IT. On Tuesday they have Problem Solving, Study Skills, and French. On Wednesday they have Science, Math and Music. Finally on Thursday they have Social Studies, Health Family and Life Education, and Spanish. All of the students in the school have exams next week as well. I am interested to see how the exams look for the younger students. My students have tests that include multiple choice questions, true and false questions and short answer questions. It will be a very intense week for the students! I will be helping with the exams by being a reader for one of my students. He has weak vision, so I will be assisting him by reading anything he needs read to him. This is the accommodation he receives for his disability. Exams end on Thursday and on Friday the students will have a break. They will spend the day preparing for their Christmas concert which is the following week as well as participating in other fun activities.
This past Thursday was Thanksgiving, and it was a bit strange not celebrating it with my family this year, but Morgan and I celebrated in our own way. We began our day by listening to Christmas music! Then, when I got to school my teacher made me a Happy Thanksgiving sign. She has moved around a lot, so she knows what it is like to not be home for a special holiday. Seeing the sign made me smile and let me know that I am cared for here. For dinner Morgan and I made our host family two of our favorite Thanksgiving foods, cheesy potatoes and apple crisp. Our family usually does not all eat together, but we told our host mom that we would like it if the whole family could have dinner together. Everyone loved what we made, and they all want the recipes. Carleen was struggling to finish her apple crisp and Paula fell asleep at the computer shortly after dinner. I would say that is a successful Thanksgiving!! I am very thankful to have such a wonderful host family to spend my time here with. They are all very kind and are always there for us. I was also able to Skype with my all of my family back home. It was wonderful to talk to everyone! I am excited to go home to see my family, but I will miss my family here too. While I have been here I have gained two sisters. Carleen and Charleen call Morgan and I their sisters when they talk about us. The next two weeks here will be bittersweet as I finish up my time here and get ready to head home. I have made some wonderful relationships with my students, the teachers and my host family!
